Cloudburst

Abstract

This installation exemplifies the integration of artistic practice into my research, serving both as a mission statement and a proposal for the future transformation of handicrafts into industrial digital technology. My vision is to develop a robotic tool capable of creating three-dimensional crochet, a concept that has already materialized into a registered patent. This transformative vision is actively pursued in the MTRL lab as part of my doctoral study in industrial design under the guidance of Professor Aaron Sprecher.

The sculpture on display was meticulously crafted manually, utilizing a crochet hook and requiring 100 hours of work. While traditionally associated with clothing, this method allows for the seamless creation of 3D textiles, with the potential for application in complex architectural structures. My interdisciplinary research involves collaboration with experts in mechanical engineering, computation, architecture, and textiles.

The accompanying image on the wall outlines the code and instructions for crocheting the sculpture, showcasing an innovative algorithm developed by Ozguc Capunaman at the University of Pennsylvania.

The charging station is a permanent exhibition featured at the Ullmann building at the Technion Israel Institute for Technology. Curator: Valeria Geselev
